Friday's final links of the week

More good stuff that speaks for itself:

  • I don't understand how a lot of students I know don't think The Great Gatsby is the nuts. When I ran into FSF as a teen, I ate up every book, and then some, including the letters of Scott to his editor, Max Perkins. They discuss Gatsby in The Novel is a wonder. Imagine being Max Perkins, and having that book arrive on your desk one day...

  • When you got it, flaunt it! Dali and Warhol make sports buddies on Braniff. And if I'm not mistaken, Braniff said it before Max Bialystock.

  • Paleontologists now say all dinosaurs probably had feathers The operative word is "probably," and they don't say exactly what values the feathers had, that is, what their genetic advantage might be, but still, this is pretty sweeping stuff.

  • Brian Jones was one of the original Rolling Stones, their leader really, a fact sort of lost to time and one's perception of Mick and Keith running things, or fighting over running things. Originally it was the band fighting with Brian over running things. Jones was left behind in a haze of substance abuse leading to his death in 1969. Dangerous Minds tells of movie, now lost, documenting the Stones in 1965; it includes a rare interview with Jones that Stones fans will definitely find interesting.

  • How about some propaganda from North Korea? Rare North Korean Music Video Sings Praises of Factory Work. The one sung by Leader's main squeeze is greatly superior to the other one on all counts.

  • And finally, who among us hasn't given serious thought to taking up taxidermy?
