If you had asked me back when I was a kid which comic would be at the cutting edge in 2012, I do not think that Archie would have been my first answer. Or second. Or eighty-ninth. Archie?
But they've done gay marriage (in face of a threatened, and as it turns out, busted boycott), and now they're featuring a character with breast cancer. Obviously these are hardly similar issues politically, but they are similar in indicating that, in Riverdale at least, there is a belief that there is a real world out there that should be addressed, and it takes guts to cover either of these subjects in between Jughead jokes. Admirable guts, I'd say.
As I said, who knew?
