Said the director: “Even though the first couple of films were bad, they were well photographed, and they had a good look about them, which did impress people.”
Stanley Kubrick’s Very First Films: Three Short Documentaries is a post from Open Culture. It outlines the story of Kubrick, a Look photographer, deciding to make a few bucks as a documentarian. At best, you can say he didn't lose his shirt, but the interesting thing is, this early work is good. He was 21 when he filmed this, and it is, as is pointed out in the article, not the work of a beginner:
Kubrick went on to make two more documentaries before heading into features. The story, and the films, are all in the post.
